desert driveby

On a road trip to Las Vegas, driving through the Nevada desert, I was reminded of Brian Cox's character's line from 25th Hour:

Every man, woman, and child alive should see the desert one time before they die. Nothin' at all for miles around. Nothin' but sand and rocks and cactus and blue sky. Not a soul in sight. No sirens. No car alarms. Nobody honkin' atcha. No madmen cursin' or pissin' in the streets. You find the silence out there, you find the peace. You can find God.

This Sunday, I went down to Oakesdale, WA for my late grandfather's memorial service. The town itself has one foot in the grave; many of the buildings are boarded up, businesses long since folded, and not a soul in sight. I took a few shots of the town's rampant decay before the service. These pictures capture not only the desolation of the place, but also I think a certain violence.

I always found clowns kind of frightening. The statue of J.P. Patches in Seattle is no different.

olive-feta omelette

Okay, there are no pictures to go with this, but I made this omelette this morning and wanted to share. And since I deleted my Facebook, there was nowhere else to go.

1/2 shallot (1 clove)
1 clove garlic
1 tbsp olive oil
2 eggs
1 tbsp milk (2% or whole)
1/4 c tbsp crumbled feta cheese
1/4 c sliced black olives
1/2 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp basil
1/2 tsp parsley
1/4 tsp sea salt (or kosher salt)
pinch fresh ground pepper

Dice garlic and shallot. Heat olive oil in medium-sized frying pan over medium heat. While heating, scramble the eggs gently, then mix in oregano, parsley, basil, salt and pepper, and milk. Depending on how fluffy you like your omelette, you may beat the mixture.

Fry shallot and garlic in olive oil until almost done. Reduce heat to just below medium. Pour in egg mixture, tilting pan to make sure it is evenly coated. Toss in the olives and feta. When the eggs have just begun to set on top, fold the omelette over with a spatula. Continue to cook to desired doneness, flipping halfway through.

Garnish with fresh thyme stem. Tabasco would probably be tasty on it as well.

As my wife was driving to work this morning, she called me and told me to check out the park near our house. Although I had had a poor night's sleep and my first inclination was to stay in bed, I hopped on over to check it out. The morning light and the evaporating fog were stunning, and I got some pretty good shots. Incidentally, I got in a fender bender immediately upon leaving the park. Oh, life.

We took a trip to Olympia today and checked out Capitol Lake Park. Around the edges there's so much green growth coagulated around the driftwood that it looks like moss you could walk on.
